Clean Ocean Beach Turns On For 2011 San Francisco Rip Curl Pro Search: Day One
The Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco 2011 is critical for surfers on the world circuit to re-qualify. The contest opened yesterday in clean three-to-five foot waves at Ocean Beach as the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, Event No. 10 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title Series got under way.
Australia’s Matt Wilkinson, 23, spent plenty of shack-time on his forehand in the wedgy beachbreak and unloaded a few controlled tailwafts on his backhand to post the days highest heat total of 16.53 (out of 20) taking out his first heat in Round 1.Wilkinson had this to say:
It’s hard because you can’t hear any scores out there. I got a fun left to start with and a fun right to back it up. I was feeling solid, but I knew Michel (Bourez) was going mad and I didn’t feel safe. It was a real fun heat. There’s a ton of paddling but it’s super fun out there and it’s worth it. There are some fun waves.
Not to be outdone, USA’s Kelly Slater, 39, defending Rip Curl Pro Search champion, opened his account with some time in the hollow blue-green office in San Francisco, slipping into a handful of barrels and hooking a few big moves in the pocket to post a 16.03 heat total to take out his first heat in Round 1. Slater gave his take:
I’m stoked because I went out last night and the surf was tough, the waves were real flat and I had boots and gloves and a hood so that I could go back and feel more comfortable out there today with less rubber on. The conditions today were a lot more fun. The water is like Jbay and I thought it’d be colder, it’s probably upper 50’s and it’s not too bad.
