Russell Molony is the 2012 Australian Indigenous Surfing champion, after defeating Joe Haddon in excellent two-metre surf, at Bells Beach, Australia. It is the first time the title has been surfed for in 16 years and the previous champion Scott Rotumah was on-hand to pass over the title to the new Australian Champion. “It’s been such a special week at Bells Beach and I’m really proud to win this title,” Molony said. “The surfing has been fantastic and the standard just incredible and to come away with the win is amazing. It’s very emotional right now and I feel really honoured to win such an event.” Joe Haddon’s impeccable wave selection throughout the event deserted him in today’s final but the stylish and powerful mid north coast NSW surfer was elated to make the final.
