ALYSSA LOCK AND JEAMES YOUNG TAKE OUT UNDER-18 TITLES AT THE SUBWAY SUMMER SURF SERIES IN YAMBASaturday, 21 March 2015
TURNERS BEACH, YAMBA (Saturday, 21 March 2015): The final Subway Summer Surf Series event for 2014/2015 crowned the champions of the Under-18 divisions today, after the premier age group tore apart difficult two-to-three foot peaks at Turners Beach.Local surfer Jeames Young (Yamba, NSW) ensured the Under-18 Boys trophy remained in the Clarence Valley region taking a win in the coveted division. The local goofy-footer used his local nous to catch the best possible waves on both ends of the tide. Young, surfed four times over the course of the day and managed to win all of his respective heats, bagging a heat total of 10.74 (out of a possible 20 points) in the final. Young will now venture to New Zealand to compete in the Taranaki Pro Juniors.“I actually just got a brand new board and it went so well in the conditions,” said Young. “I’m stoked to come away with a win and keep the title in Yamba. A lot of the boys were down here cheering, so that makes the win all that more special.”Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) had an undefeated run through the Under-18 Girls to take out the highly competitive division. The North Coast goofy-footer managed to unload a barrage of fast and technically sound forehand turns in difficult sections to post a heat total of 12.94 and take the win. Zahli Kelly (Wooloowin, Qld) put up a valiant fight, but failed to find the required 6.62 wave score to take Lock’s lead.“I feel pretty good to get a win in the difficult waves,” said Lock. “The waves changed dramatically over the day from being pretty fun this morning to super small and tricky, so you had to adapt a fair bit. I knew I just had to do as many turns as possible on the waves I caught.”Local surfer Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW) suffered the upset of the event, getting eliminated in the opening round. After claiming victory at the Subway® Summer Surf Series at Cronulla less than a fortnight ago, Zaffis went into the event as the top seed in Under-18 Boys, but unfortunately failed to muster up the required score to move into the next round.Dylan Moffat (Narrabeen, NSW) took out the Subway® Summer Surf Series Expression Session for a variety of innovative manoeuvres.The main base for event 13 of the Subway® Summer Surf Series is Yamba Main Beach, Pippies and Turners.Day two is expected to commence tomorrow, beginning with the first round of the Under-16 Boys. All remaining divisions will crown champions tomorrow.All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.Participants will compete to win the chance to attend a three-day Subway® Surf Camp at the renowned Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina. The camp, conducted by Australia’s leading surf coaches, will provide participants with the guidance and training they need to make the transition from surfer to professional athlete.Organised by Surfing Australia and proudly supported by Billabong, the Subway® Summer Surf Series will be held around Australia this summer with New South Wales hosting five of the 13 events. Each event is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers.The new series was created to fill a competition void, which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers.
